Words of Wisdom

Did anyone else in our English teacher tribe get goosebumps last night when President Obama evoked our favorite Maycomb attorney in his farewell address to the nation?

Since my freshmen just finished the trial section of To Kill a Mockingbird and are still grieving the death of Tom Robinson, I’ll share this clip with my students today as a conversation starter about how Atticus Finch’s philosophy can mend a torn community, whether it’s 1935 or 2017.

Teach on, everyone!

  1. Martha Koller says:

Perfect. I did indeed feel those goosebumps.

Thank you, Mr. President. You will be missed.

  2. One of the great things about literature is that the lessons and themes are timeless. Harper Lee’ wrote a great “Guide to Life” here.

  3. Amazing! Thanks for sharing the video. I shared this with our ninth grade teachers who just finished To Kill a Mockingbird.
