What I’m Teaching This Week: 9/28-10/2

This was one of those weeks where real life pushed the blog aside, so I’m just going to post this quick peek at my weekly plan and get back to mom-wife-teacher-life duties. You know how it goes…

Here’s the plan:

Monday
Open with a five-minute M.U.G. Shot (Mechanics, Usage, Grammar) Monday mini-lecture/bell-ringer.

Review answers to the Analogies worksheet students were assigned as weekend homework.

Read Langston Hughes’ “Thank You, Ma’m” and complete close reading questions; finish with group discussion of answers.

For HW, students need to write a theme statement for Hughes’ story.

Tuesday
Open with a five-minute Lit. Term Tuesday mini-lecture/bell-ringer.

Full-class review of students’ theme choices, dissecting three models from student volunteers projected via the document camera.

Discuss importance of introductory paragraph and view TEDEd’s Power of a Great Introduction video.

Present Prezi lecture on different Hook approaches.

Assign students to write an introductory paragraph on Hughes’ “Thank You, Ma’m.”

For HW, students will finish writing their intro. paragraphs.

Wednesday
Open with a ten-minute Words on Wednesday vocabulary mini-lecture/bell-ringer.

Introduce Edgar Allan Poe and give background on the French catacombs.

Present “The Cask of Amontillado” lesson.

For HW, students will finish any of the study questions for the short story that they didn’t finish in class.

Thursday
Play two rounds of Brain Teasers to add to the Quarter Trio scoreboard.

Return students’ Personal Narrative essays that they submitted last week. Using the coding system, students will complete essay corrections in class.

Students will use the remaining class time to read their S.S.R. books.

For HW, students will read Amy Tan’s “The Rules of the Game” in our literature book and be ready to discuss this on Monday.

Friday
Professional Development Day – No students on campus.

And that’s another week. Have a great one and teach on, everyone!

I don’t know how you can juggle everything and still have time to blog! We appreciate the time you take to give us a peek into your week! 🙂

Thanks for being so understanding, Michelle. Some weeks are definitely better than others around here. I’m on the tail-end of grading those Personal Narrative essays, so I’m hoping my evening hours will be a little more open this week. We’ll see…
