We all know education is a house on fire right now, but my brain has only with squirt gun-sized solutions. I’m not sure how to fix this. I can, though, help my people. As you might know, I quit classroom teaching (probably for good) and took a new job last summer working in a college library.
I love my new job. Like, a lot. I haven’t talked much about that here or on my socials because…well, I can read a room and I’m not a jerk. In the past couple of months, more and more of my teacher friends are telling me that they’re done, too.
So what can I do to help? This:

OMG!!!! My DREAM job. I live 30 minutes away from Texas A&M University and 25 minutes from Sam Houston State University (alma mater). I’d love nothing more than to work on either of those campuses in the library department. My biggest concern has been the difference in pay. What can you tell me about your experience etc? Thank you so much for sharing these resources as well!!!!

Totally fair question, Saundra. The college job pays about $10,000 less than I’d earn if I were teaching here in our public school district, but the health benefits and tuition program for dependents (my daughter’s now a student here) are incredibly generous and help close that gap. I also don’t get summers off anymore, but the thing is I don’t even mind because I’m not so wiped out at the end of each day. We still get campus-wide holidays sprinkled throughout the year and I’ll earn two weeks of actual vacation time during this first year. Those annual vacation days increase, too, the longer I’m here. So…yeah…I know not everyone’s in a position to take a step-down, but frugal living + online income + husband’s retirement stuff + timing just made it the right move for me. Hope this helps!
