Thank you for this, Bahar. I do love my people and I love making things. As long as you honor me with your time and questions, I’m going to keep doing all I can to answer them. Your note is better than a second cup of coffee as I’m getting ready to launch my Friday. ??

Hi Laura . . . Thanks for the video. I have been a teacher for 28 years and the one thing you can always count on is change. When I first staterted teaching, standards where not a thing yet. Our district ELA person would come to our school or have a district meeting with secondary English teachers and we would divide the year into quarters and go from there. 1st quarter was narrative writing, short stories, grammar review, and parts of speach. 2nd quarter was literary analysis, non-fictional text, the novel. 3rd quarter was Shakespeare (grades 9,10 &12) The Crucible (11th), project based asessment. Students chose what they wanted to do from a choice board/list. 4th quarter was poetry: The Odysessy (9th), King Author (10th), American poets (11th); 12th grade was British. NCTE came out with standards based on skills. My home state of OHIO cane out with Ohio State Standards in the mid to late ’90s based off the NCTE standards. I am OKAY with the standards, but I wish we could have a little more fun with them. I miss the fun. Mostly because my current school district micromanages its teachers. Sorry for the long reply. Have a good day.
Smiles,
Kendall

Indeed, Kendall, the only constant is change. As for fun, you know those speaking and listening standards are pretty forgiving. ?
